Rooftop Stargazing

Stargazing telescope image

On Tuesday 1st April Bedford Academy held its first stargazing event. Several students including our GCSE Astronomers Hannah and Marcus joined Mr Stokes, Miss Banner, Mr Masterton and Mr Turner on the roof. Using the 8” Meade telescope we were able to get a very good look at the thin waxing crescent moon and its craters. We also had a detailed view of Jupiter, showing the dark northern and southern cloud bands, and its Galilean moons, Io, Callisto, Ganymede and Europa.  As the night went on the cloud came over and obscured our view of Orion and its nebula, but we had a look at the star Sirius and binary star Procyon which forms two points of the Winter Triangle.

Details of the next Bedford Academy Rooftop Stargazing event will be posted here after the Easter break.

Best Ever Results…Again

Bedford Academy has once again recorded its best ever results, bucking the declining national trend. We are immensely proud of our #successfulstudents and the dedication of our #bestteamofstaff.

Our students made fantastic progress, and notable improvements were made in GCSE Media Studies (100% A*-C), GCSE English Literature (80% A*-C) and GCSE Food Technology (70%).

87% of students secured 5A*-C, well above the national average of 81%, enabling more students to secure progression routes on to Level 3 courses at our Sixth Form or other providers. We also saw year on year improvements to the percentage of students securing 5A*-C including maths and English, 5 GSCE passes and every student secured at least one qualification. Students who did particularly well include Amrit Thind who secured an amazing 5 A*s, 3A s and 2Bs at GCSE and Sadie Townsend who secured a fantastic 2A*s, 3A and 2Bs.

We were very proud that ALPS (a national Sixth Form performance measure) rates our Sixth Form Student Performance as Outstanding. 83% secured of our students secured 3A*-E and 98% secured 2A*-E, well above the national average. We have more students than ever progressing to top Universities. Some individual students who did particularly well included:  David Ellis 3As at A Level, Kamilla Sala 5As at AS Level and Emma Anderson 4As at AS Level.
