Join Our Sponsored Read

We are running a sponsored read and we’d like your child to join in.
The sponsored read is in aid of Hft: a national charity, providing local support services for adults with learning disabilities throughout England. They support people to live life the way they choose - whether providing support for just a couple of hours a week, or 24 hours a day.

Students can choose their own books to read:

· They may like to choose 5 or 6 books around the same theme such as World War 1, sport, or heroes
· They could choose to read 5 or 6 books from a genre that’s different to the genre they normally read
· They could choose to read 5 or 6 books from authors they have never read before.
· They could read non-fiction: biographies, autobiographies, journal (diary), how to books or travel books.
· They could read fiction: fairy tales, myths and legends, horror, romance, adventure, mystery, drama, science fictions, satire.

The idea is that your child sets their target and chooses the books he or she would like to read and because of this the reading, for them, should be enjoyable. The only things we ask is that you help your child to collect the sponsor money at the end of the sponsored read and that your child writes a short review of each book that they have read on the back of the form.

Narional Poetry Day

On Thursday 2nd October, Bedford Academy Communications Village observed Narional Poetry Day with an open mic poetry recital in the atrium during morning break. Members of staff and students from all years including the Sixth form all took part, performing to the school as classes rotated through morning break. This year, the NPD theme was centred around rememberane and we were fortunate to be joined by soldiers from the local Army careers information service who also joined in.

"It was great to see so many students join in" Mr Farmer

Record year for GCSE follows superb A levels success

Bedford Academy has today (Thursday 21 August, 2014) announced its best ever GCSE results with of 43 per cent of studentsachieving five GCSEs at grades A – C including Maths and English

The number of students achieving top A* and A grades has also risen significantly, doubling that of last year to reach the Academy’s highest proportion to date. The Academy is now anticipating its largest ever cohort going on to study in its sixth form next term with students buoyed by both their GCSE results today and the school’s tremendous A level successes announced last week

“Our students have truly excelled this year and can be very proud of their exam results today,” said Claire Smith, principal, Bedford Academy. “It is very gratifying to see that, regardless of any national patterns, the trend at Bedford Academy is up

“We can also be especially proud of our English results this year which increased by 20 percentage points over last, and reflect a concerted drive to improve literacy across the whole school.

Top GCSE achievers at Bedford Academy this year include Marjana Begum with four A*s, 5 As and two Bs; Sumit Karunakotha with three A*s, five As and three Bs; Michael Songa with three A*s, five As and three Bs; and Lakeisha Kumari with two A*s, seven As and two Bs.

Our Best Ever A Level Results

Bedford Academy is celebrating its best ever A level results with 96% of our students achieving three A levels at grades A* – E, and an overall pass rate of 100%.

The Academy also saw an increase in its top grades this year, bucking the national trend which has seen a slight fall in both A* and A grades and the overall pass rate.

“We are absolutely thrilled with this fantastic set of results,” said principal, Claire Smith.  “They reflect an enormous amount of hard work by both students and teachers who can all feel justifiably proud of their tremendous achievements.”

This year we are also celebrating another milestone as we send our first student to Cambridge University: Emma Anderson, who achieved A* grades in Biology and Chemistry, and an A in Mathematics, will read Natural Sciences at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge.  Student Kamilla Sala was another top achiever with three A*s in Chemistry, Mathematics and Further Mathematics, plus an A in Physics, and will read Natural Sciences at the University of Nottingham.

The Academy, which opened just four years ago, set out to be a school of opportunity with a particular specialism in Science and Technology and, according to David Russell, chief executive of The Harpur Trust, a Bedford Academy sponsor, this year's results show very clearly that the Academy is fulfilling its initial vision:

“The creation of a dynamic centre for learning to bring out the very best in young people, open them to new opportunities and help them realise their full potential has come to fruition.  On behalf of The Harpur Trust, I congratulate Bedford Academy students and teachers on their fantastic achievements today,” he said.
