ENGLISH: READ & REVIEW

Students are encouraged to develop a love of reading for pleasure; we challenge all students to read at least two fiction and two non-fiction books over the summer holiday and write a review for each to share with their English class. Extra credit will be awarded for those that compare themes and structure across their chosen texts.

WHAT MY RELATIVES DID DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR

Students are encouraged to talk with their relatives who lived during the Second World War (1939-45) and learn from them about those times.

Many of these relatives today would have themselves been at school during WW2 so this project can be an opportunity to help to foster closer links across the generations and give students something fun to do during the summer holidays.

The student’s work will be displayed at the Academy in the Autumn term.

Suggestions for the project Produce written work describing your research Design a poster for display to show what your relatives did during WW2 Why not make a model to support your writing? PLACES OF INTEREST IN BEDFORD

To encourage students to investigate places of interest in and around Bedford.  This project can help the student gain an interesting and valuable insight into his or her local area.  It can also reveal new places that the student might not know about and which are worth visiting.

The student can consider including several places of interest in their project or consider one place in detail.  There are many places of interest including:

·        historic buildings

·        animal attractions

·        farms that are open to the public

·        museums

·        parks and woodland

·        sports attractions

Suggestions for the project

The student can identify places that are of interest to their age group according to personal interest.

Many places of interest produce flyers to advertise what they offer and these are often free of charge and widely available through the local library and supermarkets.

The student can identify their Top 10 recommendations and say:

·        why these places are worth visiting

·        what would a visitor expect to see, experience and learn

·        how long would a visit last

·        how much might it cost

·        what appeal will the place have to different age groups

·        include feedback on the visit from other friends and family

IMPROVING YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

Students are encouraged to think about their local community and how they can improve it.

There are lots of spaces in the local community that could either do with a makeover, or some TLC to help improve the area. This could be a play area, park, piece of wasteland or local building. Once the space has been identified, the student can write a project plan to let us know how they would like to develop the area.

The students’ work will be passed to Mr Cox, the Academy’s Community Development Leader, who will look to run some of the project ideas in the new academic year.

Suggestions for the project: -         There might be a piece of local land you think could be developed -         There might be a play area that needs tidying up -         There might be a local community centre, or youth club that could do with a coat of paint.   What to do: Complete the project plan below – think carefully about what you write in each section. Once you have completed the project plan, you will need to create a poster that can be used to explain your project to other people, this can include photos and drawings.   Where you can get ideas and support: You can go to www.junction49.co.uk a website which helps young people to connect and share ideas about community projects across the UK.   Other resources that will help you with community action projects and campaigns are: -         www.envision.org.uk/resources -         www.louder.org.uk/index.php -         www.handbook.battlefront.co.uk -         www.campaigncentral.org.uk -         www.byc.org.uk/resources-campaigning
